The Game

If you've ever worked in a burger joint, you know how tough it can be.  Drink machine malfunctions.  Terrorist attacks.  Getting trapped in the freezer.  Burger Joint is a highly accurate protrayal of the toils of a teenager working at the very first fast food restaurant.  The entire game takes place in a single screen (divided into multiple boards), but don't think this will be a short, easy outing.  Unlike most ZZT games, stuff happens in real time.  If you wait around too long, something is bound to happen, be it good or bad (usually bad).  Since the game takes place in the 1950s, expect some authentic '50s music, as well as hula hoops and the word "neato".

Behind the Scenes

With Burger Joint, my aim was to get something out before I went away for four weeks during the summer.  I had very much enjoyed the PC game "The Last Express" and I wanted to bring that same sort of adventure gameplay to ZZT.  The only way to do this effectively was to have everything happen on a single board.  Since ZZT constrains board size to 20 KB, the gameplay had to be divided into five boards, and additional boards were used for cut scenes.  At the rate I worked on the game, I did about one "predicament" per day.  Though I didn't know if anyone would actually like Burger Joint much, it turned out to be my most successful ZZT game.  Since it was released the day before I went to summer camp, I didn't have much time to promote it or anything.  However, when I came back four weeks later, I had tons of e-mails about the game.  Some were requests to register the game, and others were requests for puzzle solutions.  That was cool.  There was one puzzle that I was asked about particularly often, so here is the solution: to get rid of the jock, move to the front of the counter when he opens the door to move behind the counter.  When the door closes, slam it into his back.
